Republican U.S. Representative James Comer has signaled a formal entry into Kentucky’s 2027 gubernatorial race, setting up a high-stakes contest for the open seat left by term-limited Democratic Governor Andy Beshear.

In an interview with The Daily Independent on Thursday, Comer stated, “I plan on running for governor in 2027.” He added that the announcement is not yet official, noting, “It will probably be official somewhere around December.” The declaration comes as Comer, who has served in Congress since 2016 and chairs the House Oversight Committee, begins laying groundwork across the Bluegrass State.

Comer’s Political Trajectory and Previous Run

Comer’s bid marks a return to a race he narrowly lost in 2015, when he fell less than 100 votes short in the Republican primary. Since then, he has risen to national prominence as Oversight chair, leading investigations into the Jeffrey Epstein case—including subpoenas of powerful figures. He previously served as Kentucky’s agricultural commissioner and in the state House.

“Any day I’m not in Washington or my district, I’m stirring around the state,” Comer told the outlet, emphasizing his outreach. “The response has been positive. I’m meeting new people and building an organization for 2027.”

Open Seat and Beshear’s Future

Beshear, who is term-limited, cannot seek reelection. He has hinted at a potential presidential run, telling MS NOW earlier this month he is “comfortable” being mentioned among 2028 contenders. His exit leaves a wide-open field, with both parties eyeing the governor’s mansion.

Comer criticized Beshear’s leadership, arguing the governor has failed to foster bipartisan cooperation. “I don’t feel like Andy Beshear has a good working relationship with very many Republicans who are local elected officials and with no Republicans who are in the General Assembly in this part of the state,” Comer said, pledging to improve ties between the GOP-dominated legislature and the executive branch.

National Implications and GOP Dynamics

Comer’s candidacy adds to a busy cycle of gubernatorial races, including California’s crowded contest where Xavier Becerra is gaining traction. In Kentucky, Comer’s national profile—especially his Epstein probe work—could resonate with Republican primary voters. He has also been active on child protection issues, such as Kentucky’s new anti-grooming law, which he has cited as a model for federal standards.

Comer’s decision to run may also draw comparisons to other GOP gubernatorial hopefuls, like Byron Donalds in Florida, as both seek to leverage congressional experience. With Beshear’s popularity tested by national trends, the Kentucky race is shaping up to be a key battleground in 2027.
