Nexstar Media Group will produce the event, with its national network NewsNation broadcasting the debate and its digital property The Hill providing a live stream.
The "Debate Night in California: The Race for Governor" is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. This marks the first time the entire field of major contenders—Republicans Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton alongside Democrats Katie Porter and Tom Steyer—will share a stage. All candidates qualified by reaching at least five percent in Nexstar's March statewide poll and have accepted invitations to participate.
National Platform for State Contest
Nexstar executives framed the broadcast as a service to both California voters and a national audience interested in the political future of the nation's most populous state. Extensive Broadcast and Commentary Lineup
NewsNation will build toward the debate with special programming. Chris Cuomo will host his show from New York at 8 p.m. ET, followed by Chief Washington anchor Leland Vittert broadcasting "On Balance" live from San Francisco at 9 p.m. ET. Chris Stirewalt, politics editor for both NewsNation and The Hill, will anchor The Hill's pre- and post-debate coverage from California and contribute to NewsNation's special report. Following the debate, Katie Pavlich will host a special edition of her program at 11 p.m. ET.
Within California, the debate will air statewide across Nexstar's local television stations, including KRON4 in San Francisco, KTLA5 in Los Angeles, KSWB/KUSI in San Diego, KTXL in Sacramento, KGET in Bakersfield, and KSEE in Fresno. An encore presentation will air on NewsNation on Thursday, April 23, at 2 a.m. ET.
Moderators and Candidate Field
Two veteran California political journalists will moderate the event: Nikki Laurenzo, news anchor at KTXL FOX40 in Sacramento and host of "Inside California Politics," and Frank Buckley, morning news anchor at KTLA in Los Angeles.
The candidate lineup presents a clear ideological divide. On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco brings a law-and-order profile, while former Fox News host Steve Hilton offers a policy-focused platform. Hilton's candidacy proceeds despite the state GOP's decision to withhold an official endorsement. The Democratic field features progressive stalwart and former Congresswoman Katie Porter and billionaire environmental activist and former presidential candidate Tom Steyer.
