Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico on Wednesday staked out a nuanced position on transgender participation in girls' school sports, saying he would oppose such athletes if their presence compromises safety or competitive fairness.
In an interview with Fox News's Brooke Taylor, Talarico, a former public school teacher, emphasized his concern for student athletes. "I oppose trans athletes playing in girls sports if it endangers safety or fairness. Every sport has to be safe and fair," he said. "As a former public school teacher, I care a lot about our student athletes, I care a lot about our students. And so I will oppose trans athletes playing in girls sports if it risks safety or fairness."
The remarks come as Talarico battles Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a Senate race that could tip the balance of the chamber. Democrats have not won a Texas Senate seat in decades, but recent polling shows Talarico with a narrow lead. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the contest a toss-up.
Paxton's candidacy has been dogged by scandal, including a 2023 impeachment in the Texas House on corruption charges, though he was acquitted in the state Senate. In a recent survey, Talarico led Paxton by 7 points, with 47% support to Paxton's 40%.
The issue of transgender athletes has become a potent political weapon for Republicans, used effectively by former President Trump and the GOP in the 2024 election. Talarico's attempt to carve a middle path reflects the delicate balancing act Democrats face in a state where cultural issues resonate strongly.
