Subaru is recalling more than half a million vehicles in the United States after discovering that several models were shipped with inaccurate weight rating labels, a flaw that federal regulators say could increase the risk of crashes.
The recall, posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers 541,237 vehicles across four Subaru models: the 2019-2026 Ascent, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, the 2025-2026 Forester, and the 2025-2026 Forester Hybrid.
The issue stems from an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating label, which specifies the maximum weight each axle can safely carry. According to NHTSA, the mislabeling means the vehicles fail to comply with federal safety standards. More critically, it could mislead drivers into overloading their cars, raising the likelihood of a crash.
“The incorrect label could lead drivers to overload their vehicles, which increases the risk of a crash,” NHTSA noted in its recall notice.
Subaru has not reported any injuries or accidents linked to the defect, but the company is moving proactively to address the problem. The fix, the automaker says, is relatively simple: dealers will replace the incorrect label with the correct one at no cost to owners.
This recall is the latest in a series of automotive safety actions that have hit major manufacturers. Earlier this year, similar issues prompted recalls of products sold at major retailers over safety concerns, though those involved toys rather than vehicles.
For Subaru owners, the process is straightforward. NHTSA advises affected drivers to contact their local dealer to schedule a free label replacement. Owners can also check their vehicle’s eligibility by visiting NHTSA’s recall website or calling Subaru’s customer service line.
The recall underscores the importance of accurate labeling in vehicle safety, a topic that has drawn increased scrutiny from regulators in recent years. As automakers race to meet federal standards, even minor errors can trigger widespread recalls.
Subaru has not yet provided a timeline for when the label replacements will begin, but dealers are expected to be notified shortly. The company is urging all affected owners to act promptly.
In related news, other safety issues have emerged across different sectors, including recalls of consumer products over child safety violations and food recalls due to salmonella risks, highlighting a broader trend of regulatory enforcement.
