State Rep. Donavan McKinney (D) is projected to win the race for Michigan's 13th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, securing a seat that has been a focal point for progressive Democrats. McKinney's victory in the solidly blue district was all but assured after he ousted incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar in the August primary, a race that highlighted the ideological divide within the party.

McKinney, a self-described democratic socialist, ran a campaign that centered on working-class issues and union rights. He previously worked as a member of SEIU Healthcare Michigan, and his platform emphasized expanding union membership, raising wages, and making the wealthy pay more in taxes. His campaign website explicitly called out billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump, as well as Thanedar, for not paying their "fair share."

Houston Gaines Wins Georgia's 10th District, Succeeding Collins
Republican Houston Gaines is projected to win Georgia's 10th Congressional District, defeating Democrat Pamela DeLancy. He will succeed Rep. Mike Collins, who ran for Senate.

The primary victory was a significant upset, as Thanedar, a multimillionaire, had distanced himself from the party's progressive wing. He renounced his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America after the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel, a move that alienated many left-leaning voters. McKinney, by contrast, has been vocal in his criticism of Israel's military actions in Gaza, labeling them a "genocide" and calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.

McKinney's campaign attracted substantial support from prominent progressives, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The Justice Democrats, a progressive political action committee, made McKinney their first endorsement of the cycle, praising him as a candidate who represents "the future Democrats should be fighting for: working class people taking our power back from multimillionaires."

His win adds to the growing bloc of progressive voices in the House, a trend also seen in other races. For instance, Michigan's 11th district saw a historic victory for an openly gay candidate, and Florida's 20th district returned a longtime Democrat to Congress. These results signal a continued push for more diverse and left-leaning representation.

McKinney's focus on labor issues resonated with voters in the district, which includes parts of Detroit and its suburbs. He has pledged to fight for legislation that strengthens unions and protects workers' rights, echoing themes from his time as a union organizer. "I'm fighting for all my union family and for every worker to have the right to form a union, earn a living wage, and be able to provide for their family," his campaign stated.

His stance on foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel and Gaza, also played a role in the primary, drawing a sharp contrast with Thanedar. McKinney's call to end U.S. military aid to Israel aligns him with the more progressive members of the Democratic caucus, such as Tlaib, who have been critical of Israel's actions.

With the general election behind him, McKinney is set to take office in January, joining a class of new lawmakers who are expected to push the party's agenda on economic and social issues. His arrival could influence upcoming votes on labor reforms, tax policy, and foreign aid, as the progressive caucus grows in numbers.
