Vitruvias Therapeutics has initiated a voluntary recall of a single lot of its thyroid medication due to concerns that the tablets may be “superpotent,” according to federal regulators. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall this week, warning that the affected 30mg tablets could pose serious health risks to patients.

The recall covers lot number 504950, which was distributed to direct accounts across the country between January 31 and September 30, 2025. The FDA said the tablets could cause hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland becomes overactive, leading to a range of adverse effects.

Study: 1 in 4 NFL players may develop CTE, hundreds already diagnosed
A new study suggests at least one in four NFL players may develop CTE, a degenerative brain disease only confirmed after death. Hundreds of former players have been diagnosed posthumously.

Health Risks and Affected Populations

The agency warned that consuming the recalled tablets could result in symptoms such as weight loss, heat intolerance, fatigue, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, rapid heart rate, or heart rhythm disturbances. The FDA highlighted that the elderly, pregnant women, and infants are at the greatest risk of experiencing severe complications.

Of the 3,655 units released, only 1,955 were sold, the agency noted. Vitruvias Therapeutics has not received any reports of adverse events linked to the recalled tablets, which are commonly prescribed to treat hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

Distribution and Response

The company is currently notifying wholesalers to halt distribution of the affected product and to arrange for its destruction. Patients who are taking the recalled lot are advised not to discontinue their medication without first consulting their health care provider, as abruptly stopping thyroid treatment can lead to its own health complications.

This recall comes amid broader scrutiny of drug manufacturing and quality control. Earlier this year, rising infections across the country have put additional strain on the healthcare system, highlighting the importance of reliable medication supplies.

For consumers with questions about the recall, Vitruvias Therapeutics can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at (256) 239-9373 during standard business hours.

Regulatory actions like this underscore the ongoing need for rigorous oversight of pharmaceutical products. As environmental rollbacks and other policy shifts continue to affect public health, ensuring drug safety remains a critical priority for federal agencies.

The FDA encourages patients and healthcare providers to report any adverse events related to this recall to the agency’s MedWatch program, which helps track potential safety issues with medical products.
