Police confirmed they have recovered all five dolls that were purchased before the contamination was discovered.
The investigation began Saturday when store security at Cargo Largo alerted the Independence Police Department about a specific style of doll that may have been compromised before arriving on shelves. The alert followed a customer's disturbing discovery.
"A customer returned the packaging of one doll, and powder was found beneath the tape," a police spokesperson stated. "That powder tested positive for fentanyl, and the packaging showed clear signs of tampering." The department's Drug Indictment Unit was immediately deployed to the scene.
Jade Adams, who purchased one of the affected dolls, described the moment her husband opened the package. "When he opened it with a knife, it was like, poof, in the car," Adams told local media. "We were like, 'What is that?'" Adams's mother, recognizing the potential danger, urgently returned to the store to demand action. "She went to Cargo Largo and was like, 'You need to get these Barbies; you need to get all these Barbies,'" Adams explained. "So, they filled a whole cart up of these Barbies and took them to security."
Adams expressed her terror, emphasizing the risk to children. "They could have dusted that all over themselves, their house, wherever they opened it," she said. "Like, it's not just me, it's really just the kids for me. That's my baby, that's my last baby, that's terrifying."
