Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Monday dismissed former Vice President Kamala Harris as “no longer relevant” in response to a video she posted criticizing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.
In an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Kennedy was asked about Democratic opposition to the SAVE America Act. Hannity labeled Democrats as “radical leftist, totalitarian, socialist Marxists,” and Kennedy then turned his fire on Harris.
“No disrespect, but Vice President Harris is no longer relevant. She had a shot and she missed. She can cozy up to the Lulu Lenins all she wants to,” Kennedy said, referencing Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. “But she has me confused with somebody who cares what she thinks. I mean, she’s yesterday.”
Harris posted a video on X criticizing President Trump’s push to make the SAVE America Act a top legislative priority, arguing it would create obstacles to voting. “Obstacles to make it difficult to vote,” she said. “And then you’ve got the states. Nineteen states have already passed laws to make it difficult to vote, and the ones that haven’t passed a law are doing it in practice in many places around the country. Why? Because they’re scared of you.”
She urged Americans to check their voter registration, register if they haven’t, and “vote early while they can.”
Harris, who lost the 2024 presidential election to Trump, remains a potential contender for the 2028 Democratic nomination. She recently suggested the party should “revisit” the Electoral College and consider expanding the Supreme Court to 13 justices, as well as statehood for Puerto Rico and D.C. Her comments came during a speech at the National Urban League Conference in Nashville.
Harris has also been active in supporting Democratic candidates in the midterms, including endorsing Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Maine Senate candidate Jackson. Her 2024 campaign accounts have been rebranded as “Headquarters” to mobilize young voters.
Kennedy’s remarks come amid his ongoing criticism of Democratic voting rights efforts and his support for the SAVE America Act, which Republicans argue is needed to ensure election integrity. Harris’s video and Kennedy’s response highlight the ongoing partisan battle over voting access ahead of the midterms.
