The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is marketing a $25,000 VIP rooftop package for its Fourth of July celebration, just weeks after a federal judge blocked the venue's planned two-year renovation. The move highlights the ongoing tension between the center's leadership and the courts over the scope of President Trump's authority over the institution.
According to the Kennedy Center's website, up to 36 guests can purchase the “Presidential” package, which includes three reserved tables on the roof terrace, access to a climate-controlled indoor lounge, complimentary parking, and what the center describes as “unparalleled views” of the fireworks display on the National Mall. Notably, $18,912 of the $25,000 price tag is tax-deductible.
The event, dubbed the “Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks,” is set to begin at 7 p.m. EDT on Saturday. President Trump is scheduled to speak at 9:45 p.m., with fireworks set to follow 45 minutes later. Trump has joked that he might deliver a “really long speech just to show that I can do anything.” The weather forecast from AccuWeather calls for a high of 99 degrees and a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms in Washington, D.C.
The VIP offering comes after a legal setback for the center's renovation plans. In May, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper—an Obama appointee—ruled that the Kennedy Center's board improperly voted to close the facility for a two-year overhaul. Cooper also ordered the center to remove Trump's name from the building's exterior, siding with Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio board member who challenged the board's actions.
Earlier this year, the board—newly stacked with Trump appointees—approved the closure and renovation plan, and members voted to make Trump chairman of the board. But Cooper's ruling effectively sidelined those plans. The Trump administration has indicated it is still considering a “partial closure” of the center, and Cooper has scheduled a conference in the case for July 28.
Beyond the $25,000 “Presidential” tier, the center is offering a “Vice Presidential” package for $15,000, which provides similar amenities but with access to one fewer table on the terrace. Individual passes are available for $600 (red) and $425 (blue), with non-tax-deductible child passes at $125. All VIP package purchasers will be listed as “Presidential Sponsors” in the commemorative map of the fireworks event.
The Kennedy Center's promotional materials frame the event as a patriotic celebration: “Join us for Fireworks on the Fourth as we celebrate our nation’s birthday in spectacular fashion, surrounded by family, friends, and the most iconic views” in the capital. The event also comes amid a broader political climate marked by debates over national priorities, including the recent controversy over energy demand from data centers and the ongoing fallout from Maher's Twain Prize drawing a bipartisan crowd amid Kennedy Center turmoil.
For now, the center is pressing ahead with its July Fourth plans while the legal battle over its future renovation—and Trump's role in its governance—remains unresolved.
