Israeli forces swept through the occupied West Bank overnight Friday and into Saturday, detaining more than 70 Palestinians in a sweeping operation triggered by deadly violence in the northern village of Tell. The clashes there left two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians dead, escalating tensions in a region already on edge.
The Israeli military said in a statement that troops searched over 300 locations, arresting individuals it described as Hamas affiliates, arms traffickers, and other suspected militants. Eleven of those detained were taken in Tell itself, the site of Friday's confrontations. The operation reflects Israel's ongoing strategy of mass arrests following militant attacks, a tactic that has drawn sharp criticism from Palestinian leaders.
Amin Shuman, president of the Palestinian higher commission for prisoners' affairs, told the Associated Press that more than 80 Palestinians were arrested across the West Bank. He accused Israel of imposing “collective punitive measures and retaliatory policies,” a characterization that resonates with long-standing Palestinian grievances about military sweeps.
The military operations extended into Saturday, with residents reporting a heavy Israeli presence in Tell and surrounding areas. In a particularly controversial move, Israeli forces raided Nablus Specialty Hospital in the nearby city of Nablus. Hospital director Ghassan Barkat told the AP that “more than 50 armed soldiers and officers stormed the hospital, terrifying the patients” on Friday. He said they detained staff and patients and arrested an injured Palestinian in the presence of women and children. “This should not happen in a healthcare institution,” Barkat said, underscoring the sensitivity of military actions in medical facilities.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that four Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire during the clashes. The Israeli military acknowledged the deaths of two soldiers, including one who served in a local settler defense squad. Two other Israelis and four Palestinians were wounded in the violence.
The West Bank arrests come amid a broader backdrop of conflict. While a fragile ceasefire has largely halted large-scale fighting in Gaza, Israel has continued airstrikes there. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The ongoing tensions have deepened divisions within Israeli and Palestinian societies, and internationally, as the Biden administration navigates its stance on the conflict.
The incident also highlights the complex dynamics of Israeli-Palestinian relations, where military actions in the West Bank often trigger political fallout. As Democratic rifts over Israel widen, U.S. lawmakers are increasingly scrutinizing Israeli policies. The arrests and hospital raid could further strain Washington's relationship with Jerusalem, especially as the Trump administration's push for Saudi-Israel normalization faces new hurdles.
For now, the West Bank remains a flashpoint, with no clear path to de-escalation as both sides brace for further confrontations.
