A sprawling heat dome has settled over the central United States, trapping dangerously hot air across a vast region and putting roughly 80 million people under heat advisories. The National Weather Service warned Saturday that the oppressive conditions, stretching from Texas to North Dakota, will bring temperatures well above seasonal averages with minimal overnight cooling, heightening the risk of heat-related illness.

The high-pressure system, which acts like a lid trapping hot air over a large area, is expected to persist into next week. In parts of western Nebraska, extreme heat warnings are in effect, with highs forecast to reach 108 degrees through the weekend. Triple-digit readings are also expected across portions of Montana and Wyoming, while Las Vegas could hit a record 114 degrees.

High humidity is making conditions feel even more oppressive, and unusually warm overnight temperatures offer little relief, a combination that public health officials say significantly increases the danger of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“This is a prolonged event, and that’s what makes it particularly dangerous,” said a National Weather Service meteorologist. “When your body doesn’t get a chance to cool down at night, the cumulative stress can be severe.”

Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions are especially vulnerable, according to the National Integrated Heat Health Information System.

This latest heat wave follows several extreme temperature events this summer, including an early July heat dome that scorched the East Coast and disrupted July Fourth celebrations for America’s 250th birthday. That earlier event also triggered widespread heat advisories and strained power grids.

According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the continental U.S. experienced its second-hottest first half of the year on record this year, underscoring a trend of intensifying heat waves. The current heat dome is the latest in a series of extreme weather events that have raised concerns about climate resilience and public health preparedness.

Meanwhile, other parts of the country are coping with different environmental challenges. Wildfire smoke continues to affect air quality across several regions, while fireworks-related air quality warnings have been issued in the D.C. area. The convergence of these hazards highlights the growing complexity of managing public health risks during extreme weather events.
