Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and a group of Senate Democrats unveiled a report Monday accusing President Trump and his family of systematically leveraging the presidency for massive personal profits while ordinary Americans grapple with rising living costs.
The report, titled “The Cost of Corruption,” is part of a new anti-corruption initiative aimed at exposing what Democrats call Trump’s “rampant self-dealing.” Schumer, along with Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse, Jeff Merkley, and Catherine Cortez Masto, released the findings as they seek to link the Trump family’s soaring net worth to the financial strain on U.S. households.
“Trump is without question the most corrupt president in American history,” Schumer said in a statement. “He has betrayed the American people by using our highest office not for the good of country, but to pad his own bank account, at the expense of working families.”
According to Trump’s recent financial disclosure, the president himself has earned $2 billion since returning to the White House in 2025. The report alleges that Trump’s family has collectively earned more than $4 billion over the same period by exploiting ventures tied directly to his presidential role.
Key examples cited include a billion-dollar tungsten mining deal with Kazakhstan, in which Trump’s sons hold a stake, and investments in defense technology startups that have generated $3.2 billion in government contracts. Democrats also point to the Trump family’s cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial, backed by UAE investments, which holds over $1 billion in assets.
Schumer announced the formation of a Senate Democratic anti-corruption working group, which includes Whitehouse, Merkley, Cortez Masto, and Sens. Alex Padilla and Andy Kim. The group plans to highlight what they see as a pattern of enrichment at public expense.
“The scale of President Trump’s corruption is mind-boggling, and it is directly responsible for the higher costs swamping American families,” Whitehouse said, citing rising energy prices as an example. “Trump is sending energy bills through the roof by tanking lower-cost clean energy to keep dirty, expensive fossil fuels on the grid.”
Democrats argue that Trump has rolled back consumer protections and social programs while pushing policies that benefit his allies. They point to cuts in Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which helped fund permanent corporate tax cuts, as evidence of misplaced priorities.
“The Trump swamp of corruption is a mile deep and MEGA-wide,” Merkley said. “Trump and his family use his office and official connections to rake in billions for themselves at every turn. Not only is this making life more expensive for hard-working Americans, it’s a threat to government by and for the people.”
The initiative comes as Trump faces scrutiny over his administration’s handling of election security and other issues. The report is likely to intensify partisan battles ahead of the next election cycle, with Democrats aiming to frame economic struggles as a direct consequence of presidential corruption.
