Country music legend Dolly Parton chose to keep her cancer diagnosis hidden from the public, prioritizing her fans' peace of mind over sharing her own struggle, according to her niece, Jada Star.
In an interview with Extra on Tuesday, Star explained that Parton's decision to keep the illness "real private" stemmed from a desire not to burden her supporters. "She never wanted to worry anybody," Star said. "So, I think it was just a shock."
Parton passed away on Aug. 25 at the age of 80, following what her family described as a brief battle with cancer. The news, confirmed by relatives, came as a surprise to many who had followed her decades-long career.
Star, herself a singer-songwriter, told Extra that the family is navigating a profound loss. "It's been really difficult and very surreal," she said, adding that the flood of tributes from fans worldwide has been "really bittersweet." She noted, "All of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it."
The family honored Parton's wishes for a private funeral, held on Friday, Aug. 28, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, Tennessee. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, revealed in the video announcing her death that Parton had requested a final resting place that was "comfortable."
"Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy. He farmed the soil. She farmed songs and happiness," Seaver said. "Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest."
