A National Guardsman was shot in the leg early Monday morning in Southeast Washington, D.C., after he and fellow soldiers attempted to break up a physical altercation, according to interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll.
The shooting occurred around 11:10 p.m. EDT in the 400 block of 8th Street SE. Carroll told reporters that seven or eight Guard members were monitoring a crowd on the sidewalk when a fight erupted. The troops exited their vehicles to intervene, and as they approached, they heard gunfire.
Police said one of the individuals involved in the fight opened fire. The soldiers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but instead, he pointed it at them. Three Guard members returned fire, striking the suspected gunman in the abdomen. During the exchange, one Guard member was hit in the leg.
Both the injured service member and the suspect were taken to hospitals, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Carroll confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The incident is under investigation by MPD's Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigation Division. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect or determined which soldier fired the shot that struck him.
This shooting comes nearly a year after two National Guard members were shot near the White House, one fatally. The Guard has been deployed to the capital since last year to help curb violent crime, and their mission was extended through the 2029 presidential inauguration.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by service members in urban deployments. As the national debt surpasses $40 trillion, questions about defense spending and troop readiness remain prominent in policy debates.
Meanwhile, the political climate in Washington remains tense, with lawmakers clashing over defense priorities. The Senate defense fight has become a bargaining chip in broader negotiations, and the East Potomac golf course plan has drawn attention amid legal challenges.
The shooting also comes as the city grapples with public safety concerns. Mayor Muriel Bowser has repeatedly called for federal assistance, and the National Guard's presence has been a contentious issue. Some residents welcome the extra security, while others question the militarization of the capital.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that service members face even in domestic operations. The Pentagon has not yet commented on the shooting.
