Andrew Gillum, the former Tallahassee mayor who came within a whisker of becoming Florida's governor in 2018, was arrested last week in Alabama on drug-related charges, according to jail records. The arrest marks another chapter in a series of legal and personal setbacks for the once-rising Democratic star.
Officers from the Daphne Police Department took Gillum into custody on July 2 at 10:44 p.m. local time, according to booking records from the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. The 46-year-old was booked and released the following day. He faces three charges: possession of dangerous drugs, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.
Gillum's political career peaked in 2018 when he lost the Florida governor's race to Republican Ron DeSantis by fewer than 34,000 votes—the narrowest margin in a Florida gubernatorial contest since 1916. That defeat was a gut punch for Democrats who saw him as a rising star, but his post-election years have been marred by scandals.
In March 2020, Miami Beach police found Gillum and a male escort "inebriated" after he used methamphetamine at a South Beach hotel. He wasn't charged criminally in that incident, but it fueled questions about his judgment. A separate FBI probe into corruption during his tenure as mayor also fizzled without charges, though he agreed to pay a $5,000 fine to the Florida Commission on Ethics.
Federal prosecutors indicted Gillum and his longtime adviser, Sharon Lettman-Hicks, in 2022 on 19 counts each of wire fraud, along with false statements to the FBI. A jury acquitted Gillum on the false statement charge last year, and then-U.S. Attorney Jason Coody dropped the remaining counts against both defendants.
The arrest in Alabama adds a new layer of legal peril for Gillum, who has maintained a low profile since his federal trial. It also underscores the personal struggles that have shadowed his political ambitions. The charges are misdemeanors, but they could complicate any future comeback bid.
Gillum's wife, Rashada Jai Howard, has stood by him through previous controversies. The couple married in 2009. Neither Gillum nor his attorney have commented publicly on the latest arrest.
The case has drawn attention in political circles, as Gillum's trajectory from gubernatorial hopeful to repeat defendant mirrors a broader pattern of fallen figures in both parties. For Democrats, it's a cautionary tale about the perils of unchecked ambition and personal turmoil.
Political Fallout
The arrest comes amid a period of soul-searching for the Democratic Party, which has seen internal divisions over candidates like socialist candidates testing traditional party loyalties. Gillum's legal woes may further dampen enthusiasm for a potential political return, though he has not indicated any plans to run again.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party, led by DeSantis, has used Gillum's scandals to paint Democrats as out of touch. The 2018 race, once seen as a bellwether for Florida's political future, now looks like a distant memory.
Gillum is scheduled to appear in court in Baldwin County at a later date. The charges carry potential jail time, though first-time offenders often receive probation or diversion programs.
