Federal agents executed a pre-dawn search of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area residence on Monday, igniting a firestorm among Democrats who charge that the Trump administration is deploying federal law enforcement as a political weapon just weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The operation, carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a criminal investigative arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), drew immediate condemnation from Democratic leaders. They argue it violates a longstanding Justice Department practice of avoiding overt investigative steps in politically sensitive cases within 60 days of an election. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) excoriated the raid as “insanely corrupt”, writing on X that Trump is desperate to distract from rising prices and an unpopular war. “But raiding the home of a member of the opposing party right before the election — and tipping off FoxNews in advance so they are on hand to publicize it — is insanely corrupt even for Donald Trump,” Beyer said.
House Democratic leaders Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Katherine Clark (Mass.) and Pete Aguilar (Calif.) issued a joint statement calling the search a “deeply disturbing” escalation of Trump’s years-long feud with Omar, a Somali-born Muslim who has been a frequent target of the right. “For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations,” they said. “Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.”
The Democratic leaders pledged that if they win the House majority in November, they will investigate the Omar raid and other perceived abuses of executive power. “The American people deserve transparency, and we will deliver full accountability for the rogue abuse of power from the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice,” they said.
Monday’s search was conducted by HSI, an elite unit typically tasked with cross-border crimes such as human trafficking, child exploitation and transnational gang activity. The Department of Homeland Security referred questions to the Justice Department, which said the search was authorized by a judicial warrant. “Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” a spokesperson said.
Omar, 44, fled Somalia as a child, spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp and arrived in the United States in 1995. She became a U.S. citizen at 17 and was elected to the House in 2018 as one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress. Her history and outspoken criticism of Israel have made her a lightning rod for conservatives, including Trump, who has called her “garbage” and said Somalis should “go back to where they came from.”
In a defiant statement after the raid, Omar accused Trump of “political intimidation” and vowed she “will not be silenced.” “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on X. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.”
The raid follows recent comments by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who said last month that his office was investigating Omar for potential immigration violations dating back to her arrival as a refugee. “We feel … there may be more to this — the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with,” Mullin told conservative pundit Benny Johnson. “There’s no expiration to that. If we can prove it — that you shouldn’t have been here in the first place — we’ll deport you.” Mullin rejected the notion that Omar was targeted because she is a Democrat, saying, “When we move forward it’s not political. It’s because you chose to break the nation’s laws. I don’t make the laws anymore, I’m in charge of enforcing the laws.”
According to Fox News, the search stemmed from an investigation into Omar’s immigration paperwork, which was completed by her late father when she was a child. The Justice Department has ramped up scrutiny of potential fraud in the immigration system, including a denaturalization initiative aimed at stripping citizenship from those who provided false information. Immigration advocates noted that the Immigration and Nationality Act already permits judges to grant waivers to individuals who were unaware of fraudulent claims on their applications.
The raid has intensified broader Democratic concerns about the administration’s use of federal agencies against political opponents. With the midterms approaching, Democrats are pointing to the Omar case as evidence of what they call a pattern of abuse, and they are promising aggressive oversight if they take control of Congress.
