Five people were killed late Thursday night when a small plane went down in the Wimberley area of Hays County, according to local emergency officials. The crash, reported just after 11 p.m., left no survivors and triggered a fire that destroyed the aircraft.
Crash Details
Hays County Homeland Security and Emergency Management said first responders were dispatched to the 200 block of Round Rock Road at 11:05 p.m. after receiving calls about a loud boom and a fire. Law enforcement and fire crews arrived on scene by 11:17 p.m. and found the wreckage of a Cessna 421C in wooded terrain.
Officials said preliminary information indicates the aircraft was traveling at a high rate of speed at the moment of impact. There is no evidence of a mid-air collision, and a second plane flying nearby was able to land safely in New Braunfels, Texas.
Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have taken charge of the investigation. The NTSB confirmed that a post-impact fire consumed the aircraft. After documenting the wreckage at the crash site, investigators plan to move it to a secure facility for further evaluation.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the five victims. The crash is the latest in a series of aviation incidents drawing federal scrutiny, including the recent fatal crash involving U.S. embassy personnel in Mexico following a joint drug lab raid.
